Test drove a 2019 WRX STI today. It was so different than any car I’ve driven in recent memory. Very visceral! Stiff clutch, notchy shifter, tight steering, loud, fast. Loud and fast. Big wing, hood scoop. I kinda’ fell in love with it and hated it at the same time. I can’t image using it as a daily. Just too raw.

It didn’t have the optional armrest. I know I should be at 10 and 2 at all times, but in DC traffic, you’re idling 75% of the time waiting for traffic to move, so not having an armrest was annoying. Not a big deal, just sort of odd that they don’t give you an armrest in a 40K car.

The radio interface was also terrible. I hated the touch screen interface, it was slow and un-user-friendly.

But that motor. Man oh man. That SOB will get up and GOOOOO!!!!! I’m normally a pretty conservative driver, but driving that thing makes me want to go fast all the time. I’m sure it would be a ticket magnet - it was red with a giant wing. LOL!

God bless you guys and gals who drive these in traffic every day.

You’ve succinctly summarized pretty much every STI review out there, LOL.

A 3,300 lb car with AWD, and an e lectronic throttle is too raw. Sigh.... But the twenty year old engine is amazing....

I has a confused.

I drove an STI before I bought a WRX. I went with the WRX for the same reasons you describe. I just wasn’t up to the challenge of driving one daily.

I’m sure the AWD was phenomenal. The steering was direct, but pretty heavy. The throttle was great and it revved very easily. It was the heavy clutch, notchy shifter, loud noise, and rough ride that makes it visceral. It’s a super fun car , like I said - part of me loved it.

B ut you can get an accessory arm rest for $150! But yes, I agree, the STI is just a bit much at least for me to drive daily. But it still is cool... I may still need one in a few years... We’ll see what Subaru comes up for the next gen.

I DD’d my Evo VIII for 5 years. It was all that you described. In my mind it was like driving a shark in a school of fish. I could go just about anywhere any time. It also was a huge pain in stop and  go.

What was the temperature? The BRZ screen is crazy slow when it’s cold, but once the cabin warms up it’s much more responsive.

I can kind of understand. I drive a 91 Miata on a hard suspension every day. I don’t even have a working rear window, so it gets unzipped for every drive. It’s motoring, not driving.

I just had a rental car in Boulder for 2 days: A C amry.

It was kind of weirdly nice to get in a car that just kind of “car’d”. That said, would I trade my Miata for a new Camry? F--- no.
